How is Surgical Oncology used in treating cancer?

Surgical Oncology is performed to remove the infected tumor to get rid of the cancer cells. It is used for -

  • Curative: This process involves the removal of the tumor from one place. For curative surgery, the tumor should be present at one location and not in other body parts. The patient may need chemotherapy or radiation therapy before or post curative surgery.
  • Debulking: This process involves the removal of the tumor but not entirely. Debulking is performed when the removal of the entire tumor is too dangerous. to remove the whole tumor. Surgical Oncologists remove as much as possible and the remaining is treated with the help of chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
  • Supportive: This process involves the use of surgery as a supportive treatment to help other cancer treatments work well.

Types of Surgical Oncology

Cancer surgery is primarily of two types -

  • Open surgery
  • Minimally invasive surgery

Open Surgery as the name suggests is performed to remove an entire tumor. During the process, the surgical oncologist makes a large incision, usually to remove the infected tumor entirely. However, some of the surrounding healthy tissue is also removed as margins to get rid of the infection completely.

Minimal invasive surgery as the name suggests is performed to remove an entire tumor or parts of it by making a small incision and using highly advanced surgical techniques like laparoscopy, laser surgery, cryosurgery, robotic surgery, etc.

These surgeries may involve supportive procedures like endoscopies, embolization, Mohs micrographic surgery, and pleuroscopies. These surgeries are primarily performed by non-surgeons such as dermatologists, radiation oncologists, and interventional pulmonologists, as per the need.

Cancer surgeries are also supported by non-surgical treatments including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or hormone therapy as neoadjuvant (before surgery) or adjuvant (after surgery) therapy to prevent or manage the growth of cancer cells, metastasis, and recurrence.
